Purchasing Specialist

Job Purpose:

The Purchasing Specialist is responsible for the tactical procurement of commodities, supplies, equipment, and services to be used by the organization. This individual will utilize knowledge, skills and experience to purchase goods and services that meet product and quality requirements and specifications at the most favorable price for the company, while simultaneously building and maintaining strategic relationships with key suppliers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and survey buying markets in order to source the most optimal suppliers, in accordance with corporate objectives.
  • Place purchase orders ensuring flow of inventory that guarantees optimum stock levels and meets turnover goals.
  • Identify vendors of materials, equipment or supplies.
  • Evaluate cost and quality of goods or services.
  • Up front quoting support duties, negotiate or oversee the negotiation of purchase contracts.
  • Sourcing, negotiation, contracting & executing agreements to fulfill day-to-day business needs, primarily for specialty materials & services not available on existing agreements.
  • Participate in the development of specifications for equipment, products or substitute materials.
  • Managing purchasing related project teams and initiatives with operations, engineering, etc.
  • Advise management on important procurement, purchasing, supply chain and inventory matters.
  • Process improvements and process expertise for procurement & supply chain.
  • Establish delivery schedules, monitor progress and contact clients and suppliers to resolve issues.
  • Analyze inventory needs based on sales trends and inventory levels.
  • Provide product, storage and order information to all internal departments as requested.
  • Work with AP department to arrange for payments to vendors for products or services procured.
  • Other relevant duties.

Requirements:

  • Diploma or Degree in Business, Finance, Engineering or Supply Chain Management.
  • 2 - 3 years progressive experience in a purchasing role. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of integrated supply chain and logistics concepts and theories.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to corporate purchasing practices.
  • Demonstrated work experience of successful JIT management required.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate tools for grading, analyzing, and assessing materials, equipment, supplies, services, and other commodities.
  • Working experience in the NAFTA auto parts industry preferred.
  • Certified Professional Purchaser (C.P.P.) designation or registration in the educational program of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada is considered an asset.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with corporate departments and key business partners.
  • Strong writing skills and strong computer skills in a Windows environment.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
